British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
